Princess Diana said, “I want my boys to have an understanding of people’s emotions, their insecurities, people’s distress, and their hopes and dreams.”

One thing that connects all people is the emotion we feel from time to time. The seven universal emotions include anger, fear, disgust, happiness, sadness, surprise, and contempt. Our emotions can be ignited by someone we love or someone we hate. Ever hear the phrase “roller coaster of emotions?” That’s because we ride the swells and the dips of the emotional journey of life.

On February 13, our Winter Ambassadors met at Madonna University to think about why, exactly, our emotions can carry us on such an ocean wave of a wild ride. OEW Writing Instructor Christina Stansell-Weaver, asked the Ambassadors to start with writing a list of all the emotions they have personally felt at some point in their life.

What do you expect these teens emotions were? The same as yours…

Heartbreak.

Anxiety.

Love.

Stress.

Since we all feel emotion, we asked the Ambassadors to learn about some of the emotions that we share with other people. Starting with the big scary hairy ones and ending with the happy peaceful ones. Each Ambassador took an emotion they listed and were asked to write a RANT.  A rant is a piece of writing that yells at the reader to get their attention. It’s strong, insistent, and has a rhythm to it that makes you pay attention.

One Earth Writing teen ambassador writes about emotions.

Rant’s can be a great way to get your thoughts out. They express disagreement, and can make the author appear to be a bold thought leader.  To write your own rant, try using one of these sets of phrases and start each line with the same phrase:

You just don’t understand…

I am so angry…

I want you to know…

Listen to me…
